Responsible leather, measured.
Leather is a by-product of the meat and dairy industry. Turning hides into durable products is recycling at its best, but only if it is done responsibly. Here is how we do it, with numbers.
How we do it
Water and effluent
Tertiary-level effluent treatment at both tanneries: 1,000 m³ a day at Awash (with filter press) and 600 m³ a day at Abyssinia. In 2016 we invested over ETB 28 million in a biological effluent treatment plant at Abyssinia.
Environment02Chemicals
Chrome recovery recycles waste chrome back into tanning. Restricted substances controlled to EU REACH requirements: chromium VI below 3 ppm, azo dye screening, PFC/PFOA-free finishes.
Environment03People and safety
ISO 45001 occupational health and safety system and regular training for all workers. Equal employment for women and for people from surrounding communities.
People & community04Responsible sourcing
Hides and skins from over 2,000 Ethiopian smallholders and collectors; batch traceability from hide to finished leather; support for Ethiopia's livestock value chain.
