Manufacturing Units

ELICO is a company that specializes in the production of leather and leather products. It has been producing leather and goods for over fifty years. Its two tanneries are located in Addis Ababa and produce a combined 2.2 million square meters per annum of finished leather from ethically and efficiently collected sheep skin, goat skin, and cowhide. The company also has three factories, Universal, Fontanina, and Tikur Abay. Between the two, about 327,000 leather goods are produced every year. The company is a major producer of leather goods in Ethiopia, exporting to Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Awashe Tannery

Awash Tannery is one of the oldest and most reputable tanneries in the country. Founded in 1957, Awash has been supplying high-quality leather to businesses and individuals for over sixty years. Awash Tannery is known for its traditional tanning methods, which yield some of the finest and most durable leather available. It employs around 760 workers and produces around 1.5 million square meters of leather annually.The tannery is also known for its commitment to environmental sustainability, as it uses an eco-friendly tanning process that does not pollute the local water supply.

Abyssinia Tannery

Abyssinia Tannery was established in 1972 by an Israeli investor named Mr. Shalom Shalom. With an annual production capacity of more than 660 thousand square meters, Abyssinia produces Export Standard leather for both local and international markets. Currently, the factory is engaged in the production of superior quality goat suede uppers for the export market as well as sheep Napa uppers, milled goat (Moccasin) and hide Kamush for the local market.

Universal Leather Products

Universal Leather Products Factory was established in 1984 by the Ethiopian government. ELICO privatized Universal in 1997 in an effort to produce value-added products and create job opportunities . The factory manufactures leather goods, garments, small leather articles, and industrial gloves by using the sister factories' leather products as an input. Universal produces more than 80,000 leather garments and goods every year.

Fontanina Shoe Factory

Fontanina Shoe Factory was established in 2013 with an estimated investment capital of ETB 84.8 Million to be able to produce different models of men’s and ladies' shoes for the international and domestic market. Fontanina has deployed all of the necessary production materials and technologies, as well as qualified experts, to meet the most recent and advanced shoe manufacturing industry standards.With a production capacity of more than 240,000 pairs of shoes per annum, Fontanina is one of the largest leather shoe producers in Ethiopia.
